You will love ecobee’s indoor security camera with Alexa built in
Let’s start with why you want an indoor security camera
It mostly comes down to one thing: peace of mind.
- You can monitor (and talk to!) any room in your home when you’re out — or just in another room
- If your camera detects a person moving around your home when there shouldn’t be, it will notify you
If you had an ecobee SmartCamera, you could…
- Check in on a pet while you’re out (you can even chat with your furry friend through the SmartCamera’s speaker, how fun is that?!)
- Look in on your kids’ playtime (or anything!) while you’re Zoom’ing in the other room
- Monitor your home when you’re away for long periods to make sure all is well
- See your sleeping little one on your Echo Show or Fire TV without waking them
ecobee’s SmartCamera also has great high-end features such as…
- The ability to recognize when a person enters the frame (and keep them front and center)
- It’ll show you the whole room with its 180-degree field of vision
- Awesome 1080p image quality
- Some killer Alexa features (read on!)

Your ecobee SmartCamera will work great with Alexa
“Alexa, show me the Front Door” will pull up a live camera feed of what’s happening right inside the front door on your Echo Show or Fire TV. (Replace “Front Door” with any room in your home where you have the camera!)
This is super handy when you want to see who just got home. Or if you hear suspicious sounds even though you’re not expecting a visitor and want to double check there’s no intruder.
Want to greet the person who just arrived? Say “Alexa, talk to the Front Door!” (They’ll be able to talk back to you too!)
And when you’re out, you can check your camera’s feed right from the Alexa app 🙂

And, this camera even doubles as an Alexa speaker!
That means it’ll be both your eyes and ears as an indoor security camera and an Echo speaker where you can access Alexa for playing music, making calls and the dozens of other things Alexa helps you do every day.
So whatever room you put it in, you’ll now have Alexa access there too. It really is the perfect indoor security camera for Alexa super users like us 🙂

It’s super easy to set it up with Alexa
First, let’s get your camera up and running! (5 min or less)
Before you set your new SmartCamera up with Alexa, you’ll have to go through a few super easy set-up steps.
(I know the below looks like a lot of steps, but it’s mostly just tapping through screens and takes less than 5 minutes!)
- Download the ecobee app from the App Store or Google Play
- Open the app and tap the “Create Account” button (or tap “Sign In” if you already have an ecobee account)
- Follow the prompts to add your home then tap the “Add a device” button
- Select “Camera”
- Follow the prompts to create two-factor authentication to keep your video feed secure (I opted to provide my mobile phone number to receive a verification code) and save your recovery code in case you need to refer to it in the future
- Follow the prompts to plug in your camera, remove the blue film from the front and remove the tiny sticker on the back that says “Remove before use” (you’ll need to remove this sticker in order to connect your SmartCamera to the power chord!)
- Once the LED lights at the top of the camera glow amber, tap the “Good to go!” button (FYI, my SmartCamera’s lights looked more yellow than amber)
- Tap “ecobee SmartCamera” on the Select Device tab (be sure your phone is right next to the SmartCamera otherwise it might not find it)
- Enter your Wi-Fi network name and password
- Tap “Join” on the pop-up asking if “ecobee” can join Wi-Fi Network “ecobee Inc. – and then some numbers”
- You’ll arrive on a “Verifying your Camera” screen and will need to wait about 30 seconds (it says you’ll need to wait 5 minutes, but it took much less time for me)
- Name your SmartCamera (I recommend something short and intuitive like “Nursery Camera”)
- Follow just a few more prompts to complete set-up! (Note that when asked, allow push notifications so you can be alerted if your SmartCamera picks up something fishy going on in your home)
- Tap the “Show me my camera” button to see the live feed for the first time!
- Play around with it! Unmute to hear what’s happening, tap “Talk” to talk through its speaker and tap “Pan” to see different parts of the room
Once got your new ecobee SmartCamera up and running, it’ll just take another minute to set it up with Alexa!
Next, run through these steps to enable Alexa on your SmartCamera
Remember, the SmartCamera actually has Alexa built into it, so it functions almost just like an Echo.
To use this fantastic feature, you need to enable it first:
- Open the ecobee app and select your SmartCamera from the list of devices
- Tap the gear icon in the top right corner to access “Settings”
- Tap “Link Amazon Alexa” at the bottom
- Tap “Sign in with Amazon”
- Sign in using your Amazon credentials
- Tap “Allow” when asked if ecobee SmartCamera can access “Alexa Voice Services and Alexa Account Connection” (wait 10-15 seconds for the spinner to disappear)
- Say “Alexa, discover devices” to your SmartCamera (make sure you say it to your SmartCamera and not to your Echo!) and then tap “I’ve Said it”
- Say “Alexa” and any request just like you would to an Echo speaker! You’ll notice the LED indicator will light up in that familiar shade of blue 🙂
Lastly, follow these steps so you can pull up the live camera feed on your Echo Show or Fire TV
- Tap/click here to navigate to the ecobee Alexa skill page
- Tap “Enable”
- Follow the prompts to link your ecobee account
- Tap “Accept”
- In the Alexa App, tap “Devices” on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap “+” in the upper right corner
- Tap “Add Device” from the menu
- Tap “Camera”
- Tap “Other”
- Tap “Discover Devices”
- Tap “Set up device” when you get to the screen that says “1 camera found and connected”
- Follow the prompts, and you’ll be good to go!
- Say “Alexa, show me the (insert the name of your SmartCamera)” to your Echo Show to test it out! (and make sure your Echo is set to your account and not to the account of another member of your household)
