That’s a great question! When I want to play my Spotify playlists in shuffle mode, I go into the Spotify app, locate the playlist and tap the “Shuffle Play” button at the top. Then when you go to play the playlist via Alexa on your Echo, it’ll be shuffled! So the next time it plays via a routine, it will start from a different song.
If you want to play the songs in order and “un-shuffle” them, go back into the Spotify app, tap into the song that’s playing and then tap the two intersecting arrows icon that’s directly to the left of the larger “back” button icon.
This isn’t a fix. I have to open the app and hit shuffle every time. People want it to be on shuffle as a default so they DONT HAVE TO open the Spotify app every time.
Agreed. This fix doesn’t work for alarms, for instance, because it’s difficult to go into Spotify in your sleep.
Perfect! Worked perfectly!
- Say “Alexa, play [playlist name] on [device or group name]. First song starts playing…
- Say “Alexa, turn on shuffle mode”. First track keeps playing…
- Say “Alexa, skip track”. First shuffled track plays!
Or, say ‘Alexa, shuffle my [name] playlist’. One command instead of three
Here’s the real solution:
“Alexa, play [playlist name] playlist [speaker group name (optional)] shuffle”
This will play the playlist starting from a random track in shuffle mode.
Try “Alexa, shuffle playlist ”
Note here that in stead of asking Alexa to play the playlist I ask it to shuffle directly and it shuffles and then plays the songs.
I mean “Alex, shuffle the playlist [playlist name]”

The CORRECT and only working solution is to write your Routine in exactly this order: Shuffle Playlist ‘Playlist Name’. Have a lovely day.
Going into settings on Alexa, Routine and naming the action Shuffle Playlist ‘Playlist Name’ works perfectly.

Yeah, when playing SPOTIFY playlists specifically, I have tried ALL of the above-listed conventions to make it shuffle and NONE of them work. I think it must be a Spotify-specific thing. I actually prefer Pandora, but can get a better deal buying a Hulu/Spotify combo… so, I guess you get what you pay for.
If anyone has had success asking Alexa to shuffle a Spotify-specific playlist, please tell me how. I just don’t think it’s possible to do so from Alexa proper with Spotify.
Nothing works. It either starts at the first song or when it does actually start at a random song it stops a little into playing the song. The latest attempt was “Alexa play Jeffs playlist playlist inside shuffle.
Jeffs playlist is the name of the playlist because otherwise it plays some comedian name Jeffs station or Jeff Beck.
Inside is the group name.
