I want to be sure it goes to sleep and goes dark when I go to sleep so its not lit in the middle of the night.

You can say “Alexa, turn on do not disturb” to block alerts for calls, messages, etc. and that should put the display into idle mode where the screen is dimmed.
You can also say “Alexa, turn off the screen” to turn it off completely.
You can also say “Alexa, turn off the screen” to turn it off completely.

If you want to do it as a routine, use \”Add Action\” > \”Custom\” and type \”turn off display\”
This will force an \”Alexa, turn off display\” command to be processed without having to actually say it out loud.

I searched the action too, it is not available, you should have waited to Knight Jim. Where do you add this action on the phone app or on my Echo Show? or Echo Spot?
On the phone app, add action, customised, (it is at the very top).

But then she hears alexa in another part of the home and is always coming back on….HOW to turn off so she cant hear? Very poor programming flexibility I SHOULD be able to say “alexa turn show screen and listening for wake word both off until 8am but noooo that would be too simple so amazon refuses

I had the same issue, wanting to turn the screen off in the evening.
On the Alexa app on your phone find the device that you’re talking about, the Echo Show.
Tap More in the bottom right corner.
Tap + in the top right corner.
From the drop down list tap Routine.
On the next screen Name the routine if you want, eg Screen off, and press Next in top right corner.
Where it says When Tap “Add an event”
Press Schedule on next page.
Press “At time” or Sunset or whatever you want.
Choose your days and time. I chose 20.00
Press Next in top right corner.
Where it says Alexa Will press Add an Action
The top option is Customised. Tap this.
Type “Turn screen off”
Tap Next in top corner.
Press Save at the bottom.
You’re done.
Not obvious but I got there and it works!
