I have the Alexa app in my car, but I was told that I need a data plan from OnStar to use it.
Why would the manufacturer put something in my car that would cost me so much money to take advantage of it?

Hi Karen,
I can’t speak for your car manufacturer’s business strategy, but I do have an idea.
My guess would be that if you have a data plan from OnStar, you would not need your phone to use OnStar or Alexa. In a scenario where you forgot your phone at home, or your phone’s battery is dead – you could still use Alexa.
Having said that, the Alexa app through your phone may be sufficient for you. Ensure that you have connected your phone to your car’s infotainment system and open the Alexa app. If you can connect your phone and open the Alexa app when parked, you may be able to drive and keep the Alexa app on your phone open, eliminating the need for the OnStar data plan and integration.
