Amazon Alexa Bluetooth makes pairing devices a snap
What is Amazon Alexa Bluetooth?
Before we talk about Amazon Alexa Bluetooth, it’s helpful to first start by understanding the root of what Bluetooth is and can do apart from how it works with Amazon and Alexa-enabled devices.
Bluetooth at its core is the technology that allows you to create a wireless connection between two devices. You may already be familiar with Bluetooth if you’ve connected your cell phone to your car in order to play media from your phone.
But Bluetooth has capabilities far beyond simply streaming music to another device. For example, certain phones can be tethered to a computer via Bluetooth for easy file sharing. Smart home devices (think thermostats, doorbells, security cameras, etc), all utilize Bluetooth during initial set-up. Why? When you connect a smart device to your phone via Bluetooth, it allows your phone to share certain settings (like your wifi signal and password) to the device so that it can easily connect to the internet.
Now that you understand what Bluetooth is and what it does, it’s easy to understand how this functionality is important with your Amazon Alexa device. Just like any other Bluetooth device, by pairing your Alexa device to your phone during set-up, you can share wifi credentials, or even use your Alexa device as a separate Bluetooth speaker, just like your car!
What types of devices can utilize Amazon Alexa Bluetooth?
I touched on this above, but there are numerous devices that connect to Amazon Alexa via Bluetooth. From smart home lighting like Philips Hue lights, to robotic vacuum cleaners like a Roomba, most Alexa smart devices utilize bluetooth during initial pairing. Here are more examples:
- Other Echo devices
- Smart Plugs

- Smart-home Enabled Garage Doors
- Security Systems
- Hub devices (used in some lighting scenarios and elsewhere)
- Smart Thermostat

- Christmas Trees (yes, really!)
