When I was a kid, I loved those choose-your-own-adventure books where you flipped pages to change the way the story unfolded time and time again.

So it’s no surprise that adult me has been loving Cursed Painting, the Dungeons & Dragons-style choose-your-own adventure Alexa game. 

Your objective? Find the painting and stop the curse!

You’ll battle spooky creatures with a D&D-like roll of the die, and gain experience, pick up tools, join fellow game players in battling monsters, and hopefully, find the painting to stop the curse plaguing the kingdom.

You can play as an adventurer, thief, or noblewoman

Once you’ve selected your role (I started with noblewoman!), the immersive story starts you on your quest, with sound effects, dramatic music, and, if you have an Echo Show, sepia-toned illustrations to go along with it.

What part should I play?

Each character has its own special skill — noblewomen start out with extra power, thieves with extra agility, and adventurers with extra toughness.

Once you reach 3 points in any of these areas, you get a superpower, such as an extremely powerful attack, or a sneak attack that blinds your opponent.

Your Cursed Painting cheat sheet

Keep these Alexa commands handy to maximize your chances!

“Repeat” lets you hear your options again.

“Check stats” tells you what level of experience you’ve reached, and how much health, power, agility, and toughness you have. 

“Open Inventory” reminds you what weapons and tools you’re carrying.

“Tutorial” gives you lessons on combat during a battle.

“Restart” lets you start the whole adventure over again — in case you made a really wrong turn or just want to play again as a different character.

3 pro tips to know before you start your quest:

Pro Tip #1

If you’ve sustained a lot of damage in battle, quitting the game and waiting a few days will let you slowly heal and be battle ready again.

Pro Tip #2

Don’t worry if you only have a few minutes to play. The game will save any progress, and pick right back up where you left off when you’re ready to play again.
