Need to fix an Alexa freezing issue?
Here are 5 things to try:
#1. Wait a few hours and then try asking Alexa something again
From time to time, Alexa can go down due to an issue on Amazon’s end. So if this is the first time you experience Alexa freezing, you might just need to wait a little bit for Alexa to come back online.
But this should not happen to you on a regular basis, so if it does try one of the fixes below.
#2. Unplug the Echo device and plug it back in
Sometimes a simple restart works miracles! And you won’t need to sign in again or anything like that, it’s super easy.
#3. Make sure Alexa is still connected to the internet
Issues arise when Alexa loses connectivity to the internet. To check:
- Go into the Alexa app
- Tap the hamburger icon in the top left corner
- Tap Settings
- Tap Device Settings
- Tap the Echo smart speaker device that’s giving you problems
- Check if the device is connected to the internet (if it says “Device offline” at the top, that means it’s not connected)
- If your Echo is offline, make sure it’s in range of your wifi router and try reconnecting to wifi by tapping “Change” to the right of “Wifi Network”
#4. Ask Alexa to check for a system update
Your Alexa device should download software updates automatically when connected to the internet. But if you are having issues with Alexa, it’s definitely worth checking for a system update. Just say “Alexa, check for software updates.”
If you are having trouble updating your device, restart it by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
#5. If all else fails, try a full reset of your Echo device
If your Echo devices remains unresponsive, follow Amazon’s instructions to reset it.
