How to change the Alexa wake word
When I say “Alexa,” the wrong Echo answers me!
I get this complaint ALL. THE. TIME. Who doesn’t hate it when they say “Alexa,” and the Echo from the living room answers instead of the kitchen?
Fortunately, there’s a super-easy fix (which I learned from a VoiceBrew subscriber!).
Just say “Alexa, change the wake word!” to your living room Echo. Alexa will prompt you to pick a new wake word for it: Amazon, Computer, or Echo.
Let’s assume you select “Computer” as your living room Echo’s new wake word. The light on the Echo will flash orange briefly, and you’ll be able to talk to Alexa on that Echo by saying “Computer” momentarily.
Problem solved! To talk to Alexa on your kitchen Echo, say “Alexa.” To talk to her on your living room Echo, say “Computer.”
Pro Tip #1
If you want different names for all your Echos, you’ll need to go through the same quick steps for each device.
Pro Tip #2
Want to call Alexa “Princess Fancy Pants” or something else? You can’t do that yet 🙁
You can also change Alexa’s name in the app
- Open the Alexa app
- Tap the “Devices” icon on the right side of the bottom menu
- Click the “Echo & Alexa” icon on the top left
- Tap the device whose name you’d like to change
- Scroll down and tap “Wake Word” under the General section
- Tap the wake word of your choice
