Want to Call Alexa by Another Name?
Just say “Alexa, change the wake word”
Alexa will prompt you to choose one of 3 other wake word options: Amazon, Computer or Echo. After you respond with your selection, Alexa will confirm she understood and let you know that you can start calling her by the new name in a few seconds (your Echo’s light ring will also flash orange briefly).
So instead of saying “Alexa, play holiday music” you’d say “Echo (or whatever you changed wake word to), play holiday music.” If you have someone in your household named Alexa, Alexis, Lexie or even Alex, I highly recommend making this change so that you don’t mistakenly “wake up” Alexa as often.
Pro Tip #1: If you have multiple Alexa devices, you’ll have to update the wake word on each one following the steps above. I recommend using the same wake word across devices.
Pro Tip #2: Wondering if you can pick your own name for Alexa beyond Computer, Echo and Amazon? Not yet!
Change Alexa’s name in the app if you prefer
- Open the Alexa app
- Select the Devices icon on right side of the bottom menu
- Tap the Echo & Alexa icon on the top left
- Tap the device for which you want to change the wake wordScroll down and tap “Wake Word” under the General section
- Tap the wake word of your choice
Pro Tip: Remember, changes you make only effect the Echo device you tapped in step #4 (you’ll have to update the wake word for each device individually).
